If you’re in Sri Lanka, and using Sri Lanka Telecom (SLT) ADSL Connection to login to the internet, you’ll have to go through a ton of trouble getting drivers and settings for SLT ADSL as they always come with a price from SLT. Oh! And I hate call center folks in Sri Lanka, because they keep you on hold for hours and return saying it’s not available.
Before starting to set up your SLT Broadband Connection, first make sure that SLT has contacted you and confirmed that your account has already been set up.
Then make sure you have all the necessary items at hand. Most of these items will usually be provided with an ADSL2+ modem/router.
- ADSL2+ modem/router
- Power adapter (for routers)
- USB Cable (for modems)/Ethernet cable (for routers)
- Installation CD (for modems)
- POTS Splitter
- Micro-Filters (for all parallel telephones/fax machines)
- Sufficient length of twin-pair telephone cables (with RJ-11 connectors)
- SLT Broadband Username and Password (this can be found in the package you received when registering)
If you are using a modem, you have to first install it in your computer. If you are using a router, you can skip this step.
- Installing your ADSL2+ Modem
In some models, the modem driver first needs to be installed in the computer before connecting the device. So ensure the driver is installed properly before connecting the modem to the Computer for the first time.
Once properly installed, you should be able to access the modem software through a Desktop short-cut or through your Programs menu.
- Physical setup of your ADSL2+ Modem/Router
- Remove the telephone cable from the rosette or the telephone line socket on the wall.
- Connect the LINE port of the splitter to the rosette/wall socket using a telephone cable (cable will be fixed to the splitter in some models)
- Connect the PHONE/TEL port of the splitter to the telephone/fax machine. Check whether the phone line is working.
- Connect the ADSL/MODEM/DSL port of the splitter to the LINE port of the modem/router using a sufficient length of telephone cable.
- It is recommended not to have any parallel telephone/fax lines before the rosette/wall socket. However, if unavoidable, ensure that each parallel line is fixed with a Micro-Filter.
[IMPORTANT: This set-up is only valid if you do not have the PEOTV service. If you are a PEOTV user, please refer the PEOTV user manual for the setup]
If you are using a router, jump to the step no 10
6. Connect the USB data cable to the USB port of the modem. Make sure you have installed the modem drivers in the computer.
7. Power on your computer and connect the other end of the USB cable to a free USB port. The power LED of the modem (if available) should light up now. Make sure you are able to place the modem in a stable position at a dust free location with sufficient ventilation.
8. If your Broadband account set up is completed from SLT side and you have set up the equipment correctly, the ADSL indicator on the modem will start blinking and will become steady within a minute or two.
9. If the ADSL indicator does not light up or if it keeps on blinking continuously repeat steps 1 through 8 again. If still the ADSL indicator is not steady, please call our helpline on 1212.
Router Set up
10. Connect the external power supply to the router and power it on. All the indicator lights will flash on once and will settle down with the power indicator steady.
11. Power on your computer and connect the Ethernet port of the computer to the LAN port no. 1 of your router using an Ethernet cable. The indicator for port 1 in the router should now start blinking. Make sure you are able to place the router in a stable position at a dust free location with sufficient ventilation.
12. If your Broadband account set up is completed from SLT side and you have set up the equipment correctly, the ADSL indicator on the router will start blinking and will become steady within a minute or two.
13. If the ADSL indicator does not light up or if it keeps on blinking continuously repeat steps 1 through 8 again. If still the ADSL indicator is not steady, please call our helpline on 1212.
If you are using a router, jump to the step no 16
14. In your PC, open the modem software and go to the configuration interface.
Provide your username

16. Type the url http://192.168.1.1 in your web browser to obtain the login page for router configuration
17. Refer the user manual of router to obtain the username and password for login web interface of router (For example, username: Admin, Password: Admin and NOT your SLT Broadband username and password)
18. Enter the following basic parameters in the relevant areas of the router setting pages;

19. Enter the ADSL username and password which was given by SLT (Ex: username = kgXXXXXXX@sltbb) in relevant area
20. Save all the settings which have been done and wait until the connection gets established. (the ADSL bulb will light up now and the internet bulb might start blinking)
21. Once the ADSL connection is established, you may refer the status of the connection in the summary or ADSL status in relevant page.
22. Once all the above settings have been completed, your computer/laptop might be ready to access the internet. Type a sample website address (Ex: www.slt.lk ) and check whether the internet is accessible or not. If not, check the browser settings as per the instructions given in the following steps.

23. If a page does not load, try refreshing the browser using the refresh or reload button. Then try the following options;
• Clear the cache of the browser
In Internet Explorer, go to Tools ->Internet Options ->General)
• Check whether the browser is on ‘work offline’ Mode.
(In Internet Explorer check whether File -> Work Offline is ticked, and if yes, remove the tick)
• Check whether the browser settings are correct.
(In Internet Explorer go to Tools ->Internet Options ->Connections and select the No Proxy option)
- What should I do if my SLT Broadband Connection is not functioning well?
24. In Windows OS open a Command prompt and type ipconfig/all and enter to check whether you have got an IP address.
25. Check whether your PC can recognize web site names (DNS is active) by typing “nslookup www.slt.lk” on command prompt. If you get a reply then the DNS is also active.
26. If an IP address is obtained, check whether the internet connection is working by typing ping www.slt.lk on command prompt. If you get a reply then the PC can access the internet and the issue is with your browser settings.
27. If you have any trouble with either IP address or DNS, please check physical connectivity of telephone line to router or otherwise call 1212 and register a fault.
28. If the issue still persists:
• Check the physical connectivity
• Check ADSL Modem / Router settings once again
• Check if you have entered the correct username and password and try again (In case the user name has been incorrectly entered, router might require approximately 5 mins or so to authenticate the newly entered password. Please wait patiently until the router is refreshed.)
29. If the problem persists even after several re-entries call 1212 and register a fault.
Note about Username / Password:
All Usernames begin with the two character area code, followed by your Telephone number and an @ sign (Yes, Like an Email Address) followed by a domain name depending on the connection package you have selected. If its Home Express, Your username will end in @ sltadsl.lk. If it’s a Broadband Package it will end as @ sltbbent.lk.
Eg. ak 2238899 @ sltadsl.lk / ak 2238899 @ sltbbent.lk
In older connections, password will be your telephone number without any other codes. Newer connections have strong passwords like h65$%@BS or eg524%#@.
